New to dance? Here are some styles you might like to try

05/11/2018

It's never too late to learn how to dance. Whether you're a kid just starting or an adult wanting to experience the raw joy of dance classes for the first time, learning to dance comes with a massive list of health and social benefits. There are many different style of dance, from some age old styles (ballet anyone?) to some of the more contemporary dance styles like hip hop. Before diving in, have a think about the kinds of dance styles that you like, the kinds of movements that appeal to you most, as well as the music that goes along with it. If you dont like jazz music, jazz dance classes might not be for you!

If you’re new to dance, here’s our list of styles you might like to sign up for:

  • Jazz Classes. This encompasses several different dance styles that were first popular in the US during the early twentieth century, though its roots can be traced all the way back to early African and European traditions. Developed alongside jazz in New Orleans, jazz dance was a social event for the African American community on Sundays, who would gather in Congo Square to celebrate their heritage. Later, social dances like the Charleston (1920s) and the Jitterbug (1940s) inspired formal the jazz dance style beloved on Broadway. These days, Jazz classes might include street and theatre jazz. What you’ll learn: Isolations (move a specific part of your body to the rhythm), syncopation (offbeat moves), and sensuality (sexy dance moves!

  • Contemporary Dance. Everyone has a different take on contemporary dance, but basically, it's an expressive style that uses unconventional movements that incorporate world dance, ballet, modern dance and jazz. Despite the name, it traces its beginnings to the mid-twentieth century. Improvisation is a key focus, and you probably won't need any fancy dancing shoes – contemporary dance is usually done in bare feet to an eclectic mix of music. What you’ll learn: You’ll use your body with more flexibility than traditional dance styles; a torso, body weight and greater use of the floor to perform on are hallmarks of contemporary dance – so don’t expect to stay on your feet! More grounded than ballet, you’ll connect your mind and body through fluid movement.

  • Ballet Classes. Despite popular opinion, you're never too old to learn ballet. Removed from the spectre of competition and career ballet can be positively fun at any age. The basis of all dance styles, ballet originated in the Italian Renaissance, patronised by the famous Catherine de Medici. She also funded its extension into France, where Louis XIV took up the discipline and further promoted the art form to a professional endeavour. What you’ll learn: Ballet is a brilliant grounding for all other dance styles. It's also a great workout, and you'll learn the fundamentals of good posture, balance and how to use your body with grace and beauty.

  • Hip-Hop. Another distinctly North American style, with a history extending back into jazz and African dance. It began in 1960s NYC alongside hip hop music, reaching its zenith in the 70s with the emergence of street dancers that locked, popped and did the robot all day long. By the 90s they’d added recognisable dance moves like the Running Man and Cabbage Patch, with the Soulja Boy and the Dougie following in the naughties. It’s fun, and social without a formal structure – and it's excellent for increasing your natural sense of rhythm. What you’ll learn: Isolations, popping, locking, breaking, improvisation, flips and competitive dancing.
